Class meets once a week for 7 weeks, on the same day and at the same time each week. Each classroom session lasts for 50 minutes. Choose a starting date/time for details and to register for that 7-week series. The final session will offer CGC testing.
The cost of the 7 week series is $250 and includes the fee for taking the test. It does not include the CGC Certificate fee from the AKC (optional, $20). Class size is currently limited to 6 dogs.
We’ll cover all ten Canine Good Citizen test items. The Canine Good Citizen test was started in 1989 by the American Kennel Club as a way of recognizing basic training. The test is open for all breeds and mixes. The test items are meant to be similar to skills that would be useful in every day life (walking through a crowd, stay while the handler walks away, sit for petting). The classroom environment offers you the opportunity to practice these skills around dogs and handlers working on the same activities. The small class size ensures plenty of individualized coaching. Portions of this class may be held outside, weather and activity permitting.
The instructor for this class is Sarah Keegans. Sarah enjoys helping dogs learn to focus on their owners — and helping owners learn to connect with and motivate their dogs — even in distracting environments. Sarah appreciates the value of having specific, measurable goals and structures the class toward preparing for the CGC test.
Canine Good Citizen Prep Class is a reward-based class. Treats, toys, play and praise are generously utilized. Sarah recommends that you bring your dog to class on a front-clip harness or a flat buckle collar or regular harness. Bring a six-foot leash, lots of tasty, healthy treats and a tug toy (optional), settle mat (optional).
Canine Good Citizen Prep Class is for friendly family dogs of any age. As long as your dog is old enough to have received his first rabies vaccination, he may register for this class. While this class has no formal prerequisite, it is an intermediate level class. Your dog should already understand a sit cue, a down cue, and a recall cue. Your dog should be comfortable around other dogs and people.
