Rally Obedience: Novice
AKC Rally Novice class with sign and course work. Optional virtual run filming.
Build focus, teamwork and communication through AKC Rally sign and course work. Dogs and handlers learn how to move through stations, connect between signs, and develop the skills needed for smooth, confident Rally sequences.
This class is designed to introduce dogs and handlers to the sport of AKC Rally Obedience. Rally combines obedience skills, heeling, course work and teamwork as dog and handler move together through a numbered sequence of signs. Dogs and handlers will work on focus, communication, precision, smooth transitions, and confidence moving through a course.
Each class includes work on Rally foundations, individual signs, short sequences, handler mechanics, leash handling, and course flow. Signs used are Novice-level. Exercises can be adapted for newer teams and for more experienced teams, with easier and more challenging versions available as appropriate.
Rally is a great way to build a dogβs attention and responsiveness while giving the handler clear, structured training goals. Because Rally allows handlers to talk to, encourage and cue their dogs throughout the course, it is an accessible sport for many teams and a useful bridge between everyday training and more formal obedience work.
Part of the class is spent learning and practicing individual skills, and part of the class is spent putting those skills together in short courses and sequences. We will also practice building toward ring-ready work, including helping dogs transition from frequent reinforcement to performing a full Rally run without food rewards on the handler. The small class size ensures plenty of individualized coaching.
In the final week, teams will have the opportunity to film a Rally run that may be submitted to the AKC Rally Virtual Program. Submission to AKC is optional, and handlers are responsible for AKC eligibility, entry requirements, fees and final submission. Read more about the AKC Rally Virtual Program.
This class is appropriate for dogs who can work comfortably around other dogs on leash in a group class setting. Dogs should be able to take food, respond to basic cues, and remain reasonably focused with other dogs and handlers working nearby.
Rally Obedience: Novice is a reward-based class. Treats, toys, play and praise are generously utilized.
